Description
This completely charming sampler boasts superb quality stitch work throughout. Comprised primarily of green, gold, brown & cream thread. Many lovely motifs: parrots, cherubs songbirds, deer & dogs. Typically, religious verse by Thomas Gibbons, 1769. “Under the tuition of Mrs Child’s” – charming reference to a governess & thus Elizabeth’s wealthy background. Condition is exceptional.
Additional Comments
The colours, stitching & linen ground are virtually just as Elizabeth finished the piece - nearly 180 years ago! Minute loss to ground & one leaf of motif in bottom left corner. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a verse from the hymn ‘Remember thy Creator, God; For Him thy powers employ.” Make Him thy fear, thy love, thy hope, Thy confidence, thy joy. He shall defend and guide thy course Through life's uncertain sea, Till thou art landed on the shore of blest eternity.” The source of this is one Thomas Gibbons in 1769 (the London nonconformist minister hymn writer 1720–1785). The whole is surrounded by a charming strawberry border. It is fresh to the digital market.
Conservation & Restoration
We acquired Elizabeth’s sampler following a full professional restoration by its previous owner. It has been re-presented in its (probably original) period maple veneer frame behind a piece of new board backing secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (doubled) picture string attached to new brass eyes. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the veneer waxed by us.
Ref: S10
Framed Dimensions: (W, H, D) 41x50x2.5 cms
