Description
Coming from a private collection, where they had been kept together for many generations, these cotton on linen George III band & William IV, possibly Quaker, samplers are both in superb condition. There is exceptional provenance to Elizabeth’s work detailing her life story in Berkshire from 1822 to 1864 – please message for further details. The texts are typically biblical & moralistic!
Additional Comments
Apart from odd areas of minute age related discolouration, the colours, stitching & linen ground are virtually just as Elizabeth & Miss Morris finished their pieces – some 180 years ago. Elizabeth has chosen a variety of coloured threads whilst ‘M’ has stitched a plainer, Quaker like piece – although delicate pinks & various shades of green to add vibrancy. Elizabeth’s text focuses on the Ten Commandments whilst Miss Morris verse ‘Time is Short’ typically reflects the importance of living a ‘wise’ life in preparation for ‘eternity’! It is fresh to the digital market.
Conservation & Restoration
We have prepared both girl’s samplers for sale by sourcing two very similar period maple frames. The unframed samplers first had the surface dust removed using a conservation vacuum clearer. They have then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen which rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the frame waxed. Finally, the samplers have been re-presented in their frames behind wooden backing, secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The pieces are ready to hang using new (double) picture string attached to freshly sourced eyes.
