Description
In two separate frames (S19A & S19B), this large collection of small Victorian plain samplers by the same stitcher is undated but of circa 1880 antiquity. Originally probably stored as a portfolio ‘Workbook’ to be presented to a future employer! There is a huge diversity of needlework skills represented by Margaret, with many appealing colours, shapes and various types of fabric on display.
Additional Comments
Condition is Exceptional. The colours & fabric are very well preserved indeed, with little damage or loss & minimal age-related staining/discoloration. An amazing collection of diverse samplers - several of which are on paper signed fully, partially or initialled by Margaret. This part of the framed collection features several pieces with a dominant red palette. One can imagine the stitcher practicing hemming, darning, patching & seaming at her school - as a means of instilling in her the skills necessary for self-support & homemaking to produce the beautiful pieces of social history we see here today. In their workrooms young girls would have had needlework lessons where they would have been taught ‘plain sewing’ in so doing acquiring the skills necessary for making & repairing garments.
In terms of provenance, the collection was purchased from a Westcountry dealer. In this framed collection we have the first four letters of her name (‘Marg’). There is also evidence that she was at some point in ‘Standard V & 14’ – the ‘14’ perhaps suggesting that the entirety of her portfolio was completed when she was aged 13 (Frame A), and 14 old (this framed collection) when she completed her work! ‘MHP’ also hints at her middle name. A beautiful, poignant antique! It is fresh to the digital market.
Conservation & Restoration
The samplers in both framed collections have been recently restored & re-presented. The individual lovely sampler pieces were loose – this framed collection includes what appears to be a cute blue knitted bonnet! The surface dust on the pieces have been carefully removed & then samplers conserved by stitching them onto fresh complementary linen attached to fresh cotton wadding which has been glued to an acid free Conservation Pro mount board. They have then been reframed in a pair of stunning, contemporary period oak frames - as a tribute to Margaret’s work and legacy! Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind a piece of new board backing secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (doubled) picture string attached to the frame’s original period eyes.
