Description
Fine & most skilfully worked George III silk on linen sampler pastoral sampler by Mary (aged 10!) A large country house, with woods either side & sheep grazing a well-manicured lawn. Unusual blue thread on the Peacock motifs. The content, stitching style & striking, unusual frame evidence a late 18th/early 19th century attribution. Rare, most sweet verse celebrating Mary’s parents & friends!
Additional Comments
Overall, this piece is judged to be in ‘Exceptional condition given its circa 225 years of age. Superb, vibrant colour retention & no discernible loss to the stitching or ground. Light age-related discolouration to the upper section, but this does not detract from the great charm of the piece & indeed, arguably, enhances the piece’s antiquity. The original frame is a most impressive feature & the attachment mechanism for securing the sampler uncommonly seen. Typical motifs of the period: dogs, birds & floral urns. A green, & brown palette predominates. Simply signed, “Mary Dawson Aged 10”, the fine quality thread used by Mary & impressive frame suggests she was from a relatively wealthy background. Interesting arrowed, geometric border. It is fresh to the digital market.
Conservation & Restoration
We have left Mary’s stunning sampler in its original untouched condition. It is attached to a stretcher with old nails & appears never to have been removed from its frame. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned, sealed & the veneer waxed. The piece is ready to hang using new (doubled) picture string attached to the frame’s original period eyes.
Ref: S15
Framed Dimensions: (W, H, D) 43x56x3 cms
