Description
A really pretty sampler very finely stitched in vibrant gold, green, white, crimson cotton thread on a linen ground. Condition is exceptional being undamaged with minimal fading. Typical symmetrical & well-ordered banded numbers & letters are blended with a floral urn & various shrubs. The religious text “Watch & Pray” appears in several biblical passages such as Mathew & Mark.
Additional Comments
Specifically, Stella’s chosen text can be found in Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Also Mark 13:33 “Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.” Various linear, geometric borders give the piece structure & clarity. Stella’s fine stitching, the use of various colours of thread & her fine frame suggests she was possibly from an affluent background. It is fresh to the digital market.
Conservation & Restoration
We acquired Sarah’s sampler already in first class condition from its previous owner. It is presented untouched in its original period gilded pine frame behind what appears to be the pine board backing used 150 years ago, secured by 19th century blacksmith made pins. The glazing shows some imperfections, & thus also probably dates from the 1800s. It is ready to hang using the original period eye. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the veneer waxed.
Ref: S2
Framed Dimensions: (W, H, D) 18x23x2 cms
