Description
This exquisite sampler is in excellent condition with first rate enduring vivid colours. Many finely worked motifs including floral urns, cherubs & crowns are present. However, the eye is drawn to the right centre where CFS has produced a table and chairs complete with teapot – simply charming! Stitched in a range of different coloured threads, a delightful blue palette predominates.
Additional Comments
The piece is simply signed ‘CFS.’ It was purchased from a Cotswold based dealer. The very high level of skill shown by CFS & the fine quality of thread used, suggests she was from a relatively wealthy background. It must have been a true labour of love to complete. Very well preserved indeed, with only a very few minor areas of damage & slight stretching of the linen ground in places. Some early darning – all part of its story & antiquity. The whole is surrounded by linear & geometric borders. It is fresh to the digital market.
Conservation & Restoration
We have prepared CFS’ sampler for sale by removing it from the (what appears to be) the original maple frame & removing the surface dust from it using a conservation vacuum cleaner. It has then been stitched onto complementary fresh linen & securely reattached to tease out (as far as possible) some areas where the linen has been historically stretched. The linen rests on cotton wadding glued to an acid free mount. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned, treated for woodworm & the veneer waxed. Finally, the sampler has been re-presented in its frame behind a piece of new board backing secured by stainless steel panel pins. The piece is ready to hang using new (doubled) picture string attached to the frame’s original period eyes.
Ref: S18
Framed Dimensions: (W, H, D) 45.5 x 41 x 2 cms
