Most Rare Exquisite George III Silk Map Sampler of Yorkshire & Stitcher Sarah Cocking Dated 1808

Description
A truly remarkable sampler! Sarah has, by painting her face on the silk ground & most intricate stitching, produced her own self portrait: in a pink silk gown, sitting in a classical pose & proudly pointing to her work - we clearly view her hair & facial features. Incredible! The principal coaching roads focusing on the City of York are shown, together with the surrounding counties.

We believe this to be a quite unique sampler & highly desirable sampler: it is one thing to research a stitcher's life story - absolutely another to be able to stare her in the face.
The diversely coloured, & especially blue, fine silk thread used by Sarah - plus the exquisite quality of her work – strongly suggests that she was from a wealthy background. Sarah (note abbreviated ‘S’ … ‘h’ bottom right) has most skilfully & painstakingly stitched her self-portrait & regional map. She has chosen to position herself against a backdrop comprising some trees, a small area of upland & a lake. The other three corners of the sampler feature charming floral sprays very typical of the period.
Many of the depicted towns & counties’ names remain as they are today, although the ‘North Sea’ is designated the ‘German Ocean’: the name changed after the First World War, when Germanic associations became politically unacceptable in Britain.
The silkwork is in exceptional condition with amazingly vibrant colours, no staining & just two very small & unobtrusive losses to the ground. It is presented within a 19th century period mahogany frame which complements the piece perfectly. The glazing shows some imperfections & is thus also probably dates from the 1800s. It is fresh to the digital market.
Conservation & Restoration
We acquired Sarah’s sampler following a full professional restoration by its previous owner. It has been re-presented in its period frame behind a piece of new board backing secured by stainless steel panel pins & sealed with self-adhesive picture framing tape. The piece is ready to hang using new (doubled) picture string attached to new period eyes. All components of the frame have been thoroughly cleaned & the veneer waxed by us.
