A really lovely circa 1820 example in pine which has the feel of a classic rustic Welsh piece. This box would have originally been used for storing tallow candles, to keep them safe from the attentions of mice. The splayed shape of the piece made the candles easier to retrieve from the box. The reddish colour and striking patination are a real feature. Original hinges. Delightful hand carved back with an unusual, inverted heart to the centre. Superb overall condition.
